After following evening classes in drawing and painting at the academy during 1945 -1946, Jan Olyslager received a scholarship for the ´Vrije Academie´in 1947. In 1948 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague where, given his talent and pre-studies, was placed directly in fourth grade by Mr. Meyer. During this period he completed many model drawings and Still Lifes. Also during this time period he made a study trip to Switzerland and worked as an advertising designer in the Netherlands.In 1950 he received a scholarship for a study trip through France, along with collegue student Aart van den IJssel.

Contemporaries: Willem Hussum, Jaap Nanninga, Wim Sinemus, Nol Kroes, Jos van den Berg, Theo Bitter, Kees van Bohemen. Some whom he formed the Posthoorngroep with.

Jan Olyslager exhibited in 1957 with, among others, Gerard Fieret and Ton Hoogendoorn.
